Directions to plot:
Tagged tree is a beech of 32cm DBH with tag #480. Conduit is at a bearing of 80 degrees and 25 meters from the tree.
Directions to tag tree:
Lower Otter Creek picnic area. Take the southern-most foot bridge across creek on south side of bridge, start down trail. Plot is immediately east up ravine and small creek. Follow creek east up ravine. Tagged tree is flagged and on right-slope of ravine.
Plot location was selected by DNH Ecologist in the field.
Acidic ravine down by large Fagus and a few Liriodendron. Tsuga caroliniana once was in canopy but is now largely dead. Subcanopy consists of Oxydendrum arboreum and Betula lenta. Shrub layer is patchy with dense Kalmia. High Bryophyte cover on soil. Common indicative herbs are Galax, Mitchella, Thelypteris, Polystichum acrostichoides. Steep sided ravine with stream. Center line is along bottom of ravine. Plot includes steep slopes on either side.
